HilltopAds conversions, credited to the right zone

ClickFlare reads HilltopAds' {{token}} click ID, price, zone, campaign and country from the campaign URL. Each conversion goes back to HilltopAds by S2S postback with the payout, currency and your advertiser ID. Earlier funnel steps can go back as micro-conversions.

Blacklist HilltopAds zones on conversion data

Zone-level results

{{zoneid}} lands in every report. See which publisher zones convert, then blacklist or whitelist them in HilltopAds.

Micro-conversions for analysis

Send registrations or deposits with a goal parameter. HilltopAds shows them in stats and keeps optimizing on the one conversion without a goal.

Payout and currency sent back

The postback carries price={payout} and currency=USD, so HilltopAds' stats show revenue next to your spend, per zone and campaign.

Double braces in, single braces back out

HilltopAds macros use double braces, such as {{token}}. ClickFlare stores the token as the External ID. On conversion it calls trackhta.com/close/ with {external_id}, {payout} and your advertiser ID.
  • Never mix double-brace macros into the postback
  • Only the postback without goal counts as a conversion
  • Change currency=USD if your payouts aren't in USD

Connected in four steps

You need a HilltopAds advertiser account and its advertiser ID, a ClickFlare offer that posts conversions back, and your own tracking domain.
  1. Create the HilltopAds traffic source In a new campaign, click + New Traffic Source, search hilltop and pick the HilltopAds template. It fills token, price, zoneid, campaignid and geo.
  2. Add your advertiser ID Copy your advertiser ID from the postback URL in HilltopAds' Trackers section. Turn on Traffic source postback URL and put the ID in place of REPLACE.
  3. Finish the campaign Set Cost Model to Not Tracked, or CPA for HilltopAds CPA campaigns. Copy the campaign URL and paste it into the Final Destination URL field in HilltopAds.
  4. Run a test conversion In HilltopAds, open Trackers → Test Conversion, follow the flow and complete the offer. Then check Logs → Postback Status in ClickFlare for a request to trackhta.com.

On CPM banner and video campaigns, many impressions happen per click, so {{price}} understates cost per click. Compare the Cost column with HilltopAds spend after launch.

Use cases

How media buyers run it

HilltopAds popunder → offer

Popunder to offer

One impression is one visit, so the CPM price is your cost per visit. Blacklist zones that never convert.
Banner → lander → offer

Registration then deposit

Send the registration as goal=reg and the deposit as the conversion, so HilltopAds optimizes on deposits.
Video slider → lander → offer

Creative tests on video

Add {{adid}} as an extra parameter to compare creatives by conversion rate in ClickFlare.
